Kirjoitan  vielä päiväkirjaa! Saa nähdä saanko Sallan tekemään seuraavan.

Kauden ensimmäisen sadonjaon aattona muutamia kuvia kasvihuoneesta teille, jotka eivät ole sitä nähneet viime aikoina.(Katso kuvat Noelin tekstistä.)

Salaattia on sadonjaossa. Kuten näette, kasvihuone näyttää ihanalle. Kuten peltokin. Tämä johtuu suurelta osin Sallan, puutarhuriharjoittelijamme, työstä.

Muita huomioitavia tapahtumia ovat olleet uskomattoman menestyksekäs ravintolapäivän kahvila satamassa ja mahtava yhteisöpäivä/talkoot sunnuntaina. Kiitos kaikille, jotka auttoivat järjestelyissä ja että tulitte paikalle nauttimaan yhdessäolosta.

Toivotaan, että kesä pysyy näin hyvänä!

Noin ¾ pellosta on nyt istutettu ja loput valmiina myöhemmille viljelyksille. Tähän asti olemme pysyneet rikkaruohojen edellä. Meille on tulossa tästä viikosta alkaen apuun ryhmä turvapaikanhakijoita Tapanilasta, joten toivotaan että tämä toimii heille ja meille. Olen käynyt myös Hennalan vastaanottokeskuksessa ja ROKin puolesta yritän auttaa heitä saamaan oman kasvimaan sinne.

Huomisen jaossa on ensimmäistä kertaa jakelupiste keskustassa. Tulee varmasti menemään muutama viikko, jotta saadaan kaikki kunnolla järjestettyä, joten katsotaan kuinka se sujuu. Älä unohda, että ylimääräisiä salaatteja on myynnissä.

Gardeners Diary 31st May

Still me doing the diary! Lets see if I can get Salla to take over the next one.

On the eve of our first share of the season, here are a few pictures of the kasvihuone for those who have not seen it recently.

Some of that salad will be in the share. As you can see, the glasshouse is looking lovely. As is the field! This is due in large part to the work of Salla, who joined ROK on  a work placement. 

The other notable events recently have been the hugely successful ruokapäivä cafe at the harbour and the wonderful community day/talkoot last Sunday. Thanks to everyone for helping to organise and for coming along to enjoy.

Lets hope that the summer stays this good! 

About three quarters of the field is now planted, with the remainder ready for the later crops. So far, we are keeping ahead of the weeds. We are due, staring this week, to get some help from a group of asylum seekers from Tapinala, so hopefully this will work out for them and us. I have also been over to the other reception centre in Hennala and on behalf of ROK I am going to try and help them get their own garden going there. 

Tomorrows share is the first with a distribution point in town. This will no doubt take a few weeks to get properly organised, so lets see how it goes. Don't forget too that there will be some extra salaatti for sale.

Saattaa olla, että Salla, uusi harjoittelijamme ottaa tämän hoitaakseen ja saatte puutarhan uutiset suoraan suomeksi. Salla aloittaa huomenna, joten saa nähdä!

Viimeiset kaksi viikkoa ovat olleet kiireisiä. Mikon avulla saimme pellon valmiiksi juuri ennen kuin 7-luokka Steinerkoulusta saapui auttamaan sipuleiden ja perunoiden istutuksessa. He saivat 15 penkkiä valmiiksi kahden puolikkaan päivän aikana, hieno homma! Viime viikolla tulivat 8-luokkalaiset, jotka istuttivat kaalin ja purjon taimet ja tekivät muitakin töitä. Välissä olen kylvänyt porkkanat, nauriit ja palsternakat. Ulos on kylvetty myös retiisi ja muutamia yrttejä on istutettu. Kaikenkaikkiaan olemme edellä aikataulusta tällä hetkellä.

Kasvihuoneella taimistot laajenevat. Viimeiksi olen kylvänyt avomaankurkun, kesäkurpitsan ja kurpitsan. Tomaatin taimet alkavat kukkia ja ensimmäinen hedelmä ilmestyy minä hyvänsä päivänä.

Ensimmäinen sadonjako on keskiviikkona 1.6. Se tulee todennäköisesti olemaan pari salaattia, yrttejä ja ehkä raparperia ja retiisejä, riippuen siitä miten hyvin ne kasvavat. Kuten tiedätte, sato-osuus on haettavissa ROKin pellolta ja Vihreiden toimistolta keskustasta: lisätietoja tulossa.

Joka tapauksessa ennen tätä meillä on yhteisöpäivä/talkoot sunnuntaina 29.5. Silloin on hieman töitä taimien istutuksessa ja ehkä vähän kitkemistä/haraamista riippuen ensi viikon kasvusta. Ennen kaikkea tilaisuus on mahdollisuus yhdessä oloon. Esittelen peltoa ja kasvihuonetta ja opastan kastelutöissä niitä, jotka ovat lupautuneet tähän.

Gardeners Diary 22nd May

It may be that Salla, the new trainee, will take this over and you can hear the garden news direct in Finnish. She starts tomorrow, so lets see!

The last 2 weeks has been very busy. With Mikko's help, we got the field ready just in time for Class 7 from Steiner Koulu to come and help plant the onions and potatoes. They got 15 penkki done in 2 half days: great work! Then, last week it was the turn of Class 8 who planted all the kallit seedlings and purjoa seedlings, as well as a few other jobs. In between I have been seeding porkkana, kauris and parsnip. There is also some outdoor reddish seeded and a few herbs planted. All in all, we are well on top of the work at the moment.

Meanwhile, in the glasshouse the plant nursery continues to grow. The latest sowing is of avonmaa kurkku, kesäkurpitsa and kurpitsa. The tomato plants are starting to flower and the first fruit should show any day.

There will be a share on Wednesday 1.6. It'll probably be a couple of salad, herbs and perhaps rapaperri and radish, depending on how well they come on. As you know, the share will be available from the ROK field and from the Green HQ in town: more details to follow.

Before that, however, there is a Community Day/Talkoot on Sunday 29.5. There will be a bit of work to plant out seedlings and perhaps some weeding/hoeing, depending on the growth in the next week. More than that though, it is a chance for us to have a get-together. I can give a bit of a tour of the field and glasshouse and introduce the watering job to anyone who is volunteering to do that.

Tällä viikolla aloitettiin kasvihuonetta lämmittämään ja kasvit taimistosta on tuotu sisään. Onneksi sää on suosinut meitä (aina 40 astetta kasvihuoneessa!!) joten olemme tarvinneet vain vähän lämmitystä öisin.

Ensimmäisen vaiheen istutukset ovat valmiit: yli 500 tomaattia, noin 300 salaattia ja 30 kurkkua. Siellä on myös jonkin verran retiisiä, jotta saamme aikaista satoa. Kaikki näyttää hyvältä.

Kaikki muut kasviston taimet on uudelleen istutettu, valmiina ulos vietäviksi. Mikko on ollut traktorin kanssa haraamassa peltoa. Sen pitäisi olla valmiina niin, että ensimmäiset penkit on tehty ensi keskiviikkoon mennessä, kun luokallinen Steiner-koululaisia saapuu auttamaan sipuleiden ja perunoiden istutuksessa.

Gardeners Diary 5.5

This week the heat in the glasshouse went on and the plants from the nursery have been brought in. Luckily the weather has been very pleasant (up to 40 degrees in the glasshouse!!) so there has only been a need for a small bit of heat at night.

The first phase of planting is complete: thats over 500 tomatoes, about 300 salads and 30 cucumbers. There is also some radish seeded inside, to get an early crop. Its all looking well.

All the rest of the nursery plants are being transplanted, ready to bring outdoors. Mikko has also been over with the tractor to rake the field. It should be ready so that the first beds are made by next Wednesday when a class from the Steiner Koulu will come to help with planting the onions and potatoes.
